Hair Coloring. Today, hair color remains hot, with a booming 75 percent of American women reportedly coloring their hair. (In 1950, only about 7 percent of American women colored their hair. And when they did, they did it to cover gray with their natural color and usually didn’t want anyone to know they’d done it!) Women have also decided that blondes don’t necessarily “have more fun!” Red is currently the most requested color at beauty salons. And women aren’t alone…
Men increasingly cover gray or, following the female lead, completely change their look. Men’s home hair-color sales reached $113.5 million last year, a 50 percent increase in just five years.
Choosing the right hair color isn’t as easy as picking a color you like. It’s important to consider your natural hair color, your skin tone and eye color when choosing a new hair color. Pale skin suits pretty much all hair colors. Avoid shades of red or golden blonde if your skin is pink. Stick to ash tones to neutralize your coloring. Avoid yellow, gold or orange tones if your skin is yellow. Stick to deep reds. Olive skin suits darker hair colors.
Getting your hair color right isn’t a science. It’s really quite simple: Stick to the colors that compliment your skin tone, figure out if you’re best off with all-over color or highlights & then decide if you’re going to pay someone else to do it or do it yourself.
